Meet the Team: Holly Blau

Working directly with patients and their families, RN Holly Blau provides one-on-one education. Involving them in their care, allows patients and families to engage in interventions that may increase their chances for positive outcomes.

She’s worked for Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County for three years, first as a registered nurse on the medical/surgical floor. In her new job in the Education Department, she takes that care even further.

Explain what it is you do:
As a Patient and Family Educator, my job is to educate patients and their family members throughout their hospital stay. During their hospital stay, I visit with patients and educate them on their diagnosis, their current treatment plan, and their medications. I also strive to ensure that before someone is discharged, they have the information and education they need to be successful with their care at home.

I also provide community education and training through workshops and health fairs.

What do you like most about your job and why:
The thing I love most about my job is being able to sit and talk with my patients and their family members. I get to know my patients on a more personal level and get the chance to build a relationship with them. Being in the hospital is not an easy experience for anyone, so I enjoy being someone who patients and families feel comfortable confiding in, giving me the chance to help make their hospital experience less stressful.

What does “Compassionate Care for Every Life We Touch” mean to you?
To me, “Compassionate Care for Every Life We Touch” means treating every person I meet with kindness, empathy, and respect. It means listening to every person’s needs and concerns and being an advocate for them.

When you’re not at work, how do you like to spend your free time?
I am a sports mom through and through. All my free time is usually spent at some type of sporting event for my kids! If I’m not doing that, then I am probably curled up with a good book to read.

Tell us something most people don’t know about you:
Something that most people don’t know about me is that I play a few different musical instruments. I’ve always loved music, so I spent time learning how to play the piano, the flute, and the guitar.
