New OB/Gyn joins MHSC team

Dr. Hernandez is happy to stay in Southwest Wyoming

“The satisfaction of keeping our moms and babies safe” is what Dr. Javier Hernandez likes best about his job.

Hernandez recently joined the team at Obstetrics & Women’s Health of Sweetwater Memorial. “Providing quality women’s healthcare for, not only our community, but all the communities in Southwest Wyoming” is important, he said.

Hernandez most recently was an attending obstetrics/gynecology physician at Evanston Regional Hospital. He also currently is affiliated with Lovelace Medical Group, Albuquerque, New Mexico; Albuquerque Women’s Health, Albuquerque; and Presbyterian Rust Medical Center, Rio Rancho, New Mexico.

“We are happy that we can keep Dr. Hernandez in Southwest Wyoming,” said CEO Irene Richardson, CEO of Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County. “He will be a wonderful addition to our healthcare team in Obstetrics and we look forward to him taking care of our patients.”

With several family members in healthcare, Hernandez said he was exposed to the medical field at an early age.

“After dabbing in different specialties in medical school, the decision was two parts,” he explained. “First, it’s a complete field that involves a healthy combination of surgical and medical skills. Second, it’s just a ‘happy field.’ That comes naturally when delivering healthy babies.”

Hernandez said he enjoys small community medicine and likes being involved with the community.

He completed an obstetrics/gynecology residency at University of New Mexico School of Medicine; received a Medical Degree from Universidad Central Del Caribe School of Medicine, Bayamon, Puerto Rico; attended the graduate program in molecular biology at Ohio State University in Columbus; and attended Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, where he majored in biology and minored in psychology.

He is co-owner, along with his wife, of Crossfit ThunderHawks in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. In addition to crossfit, he has a wide range of interests, including martial arts, camping, canoeing, hiking, fishing, golf, history, sport psychology, travel, beer making, dogs and chickens.

Hernandez joins Dr. Samer Kattan, Dr. Wagner Veronese Jr., Dr. Jeffery Wheeler, Dr. Ken Holt, Nurse Midwife Starla Leete and Emily James, FNP-C. For an appointment, call 307-352-8383.
